Finally, transcriptome analyses revealed that MФ–cancer cell hybrids predominantly exhibited neoplastic cell transcriptional identity, while notably, retained MФ gene expression signatures (Fig. 1G, red bar, and table S1) that clustered into gene ontology (GO) biologic functions attributed to MФ behavior (table S2). Of the five independently analyzed hybrid clones, each displayed a high degree of heterogeneity with respect to their MФ gene expression. Together, these findings support the tenet that cell fusion between MФs and neoplastic cells produces heterogeneous hybrid cells sharing characteristics of both parental predecessors but possessing their own characteristics.
