The Quran stresses the Oneness of God and the duty of the human being to acknowledge and worship God alone. If we approach the Quran with sincerity it reveals the age old questions about the nature of the human being, the purpose of his life and the various choices and destinies open to him. In other words: Who are we? What are we doing here on earth? And where do we go from here?

To extend these observations and determine whether MФ fusion provided cancer cells with a selective proliferative or survival advantage, we directly analyzed effects of >90 different cytokines, chemokines, and soluble factors on unfused MC38s and hybrids (not shown). A number of growth factors induced differential influence on MC38 cells as compared to hybrids, including transforming growth factor (TGFβ1-3), which induced dose-dependent suppression of MC38 proliferation but showed no effect on hybrids (fig. S4, A, C, and D). Likewise, a moderate, dose-dependent growth-suppressing effect of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) was apparent on MC38 cells but not on hybrids (fig. S4B). More strikingly, hybrids were resistant to tumor necrosis factor–α (TNF-α) that profoundly inhibited proliferation of MC38 cells (fig. S4E). Resistance of hybrids to cytokine concentrations that suppressed MC38 growth indicates that MФ fusion influences selective cellular phenotypes and altered cancer cell responses to microenvironmental factors to yield adhesive, proliferative, and potentially survival advantages.

This tragedy could have been avoided had a carbon monoxide detector been installed in Walt and Molly’s hotel room. Many motels and hotels still don’t have carbon monoxide detectors, which is why Lyrysa recommends always traveling with a battery-powered detector.

A second approach, karyotype analyses of sex chromosomes, demonstrated that male MФs (XY) fused to neoplastic cells (XO) generated hybrids containing three sex chromosomes (XXY; Fig. 1E), consistent with a fusion event. Chromosome enumeration revealed that hybrids existed as a unique cell population defined by their sex chromosome and total chromosome content when compared to parental MФs or cancer cells (Fig. 1F, red spheres are hybrids, black spheres are MФs, and white spheres are MC38s). Loss of chromosomes observed in hybrid clones occurred with temporal in vitro passage (fig. S3A); karyotype analyses of single hybrid cells revealed variable chromosome numbers (Fig. 1F), indicating that cell fusion contributes to tumor cell heterogeneity.

271. Ninth, one must ask whether there was any need for ensuring that the composition of this Human Resources Subcommittee should have particular expertise or sensitivity to the conduct of an investigation into sexual harassment. This Panel knows from the documents that this Human Resources Subcommittee was a standing structure and not especially or particularly created or populated for purposes of hearing the concerns of Hasson. From Achmat, we know that the composition of this Human Resources Subcommittee was mainly based on geographical and convenience considerations.

152. The degree of confidentiality and secrecy which is sought by the potential complainants pertains not to the general public but to the withholding of all information from those persons who are essential participants in this entire process – the alleged wrongdoers. At the end of the day, this Panel must be offered good reason based upon objective and subjective evidence as to why procedures of open justice and fair procedures should be limited60. Not only the Panel but also the implicated persons (Isaacs, Achmat, Ensor, Geffen, Feinberg, Adler) must also have the opportunity to test such evidence as is offered as to why there should be modification of fair procedures.

And then there is the question of what government officials do with the expertise they have requested, purchased and received.

139. The WLC pointed out that the Terms of Reference of this enquiry as drafted by EE had not, perhaps, fully taken into account that the EE manuals and procedures were not the basis for this particular enquiry when no employee was the subject matter thereof. It may have been more helpful not to have grounded the enquiry within the usual EE process since no disciplinary steps could have been contemplated. The WLC responded that the way forward for their clients and for other women, would be to fully examine the toxicity of certain cultures and the means whereby these could be remedied and abuse prevented.

In the courtroom, 12 witnesses recounted stories of Walus brutally murdering civilians in occupied Poland as a member of the Gestapo. Walus countered that he was a forced farm laborer in Germany during the war and produced corroborating testimony. The judge found Walus guilty and revoked his citizenship. The adjudication, though, wrote Lowell Komie in his 1978 Chicago story “The United States of America v. Frank Walus,” had little to do with Walus.

Then, suddenly, he will be talking about beauty and art history, and the mystery of memory. He speaks about sculptural form or painterly surface. He argues for the formal allure that fabric and draping had for the artists of the past, citing the sculpture of Bernini and Michelangelo, the paintings of El Greco. He mentions the use of fabric by primitive nomadic tribal people, who, by setting up tents temporarily and then moving on, were actually staking out territory. Purposely avoiding the catchword “wrapping,” he says that the use of fabric is probably the most important artistic element of his projects. He says he is drawn to fabric because of its vulnerability, its sensuous qualities, the sympathy it invites—“almost like the leaves of a tree, or the skin” in the case of Surrounded Islands—and because it is impermanent. Originally, he notes, his large-scale projects were temporary simply because they had to be, but now their temporary quality has become an important philosophic element. “This kind of nomadic idea became a much more powerful presence,” he says. “This taking the place and moving away, taking the place and moving away. What is happening is that the work is gone, but the human being can never thinking in the same way about a place because he knows that once work the work was there. There is kind of a contradiction—the work physically disappears, but, by having been there, is visible forever.”

107. Accordingly, we did not require complainants to make their complaints within the prescribed period of two weeks after EE had announced the appointment of this Enquiry on 12th July 2018.39 The closing date for such submissions would therefore have been 26th July 2018. We did not insist upon compliance with the Terms of Reference. Through our secretariat attorneys CTH and through the WLC and sometimes ourselves we have extended deadline after deadline to allow sufficient time for persons to ponder over what they believe happened to them, absorb the consequences of coming forward and facing the challenges of an Enquiry such as this. We learnt from the WLC how some women would talk and discuss and be prepared to participate and would then change their minds and how the WLC would listen and respond but not direct or insist upon participation. This is not an easy process and I have dealt with it in greater detail below when discussing our indebtedness to the WLC. The deadline ultimately became the 19th October – some 3 months after the EE deadline as set out in the Terms of Reference.
