"It’s toxic," says Kasun Ratnayake, a PhD student who was also involved in the study. He says the findings suggest that "if you shine blue light on retinal, the retinal kills photoreceptor cells as the signaling molecule on the membrane dissolves."
Industrial chemicals known as PFAs present two challenges. Only the larger ones are effectively removed by activated carbon, the filtering substance in many household water filters. Smaller molecules will remain in the water, notes Christopher Higgins. He’s an environmental engineer at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) in Golden. What’s more, filtering isn’t a simple solution for these pollutants. After all, once removed, they still are hard to break down for safe disposal.
membrane A barrier which blocks the passage (or flow through) of some materials depending on their size or other features. Membranes are an integral part of filtration systems. Many serve that same function as the outer covering of cells or organs of a body.
But it was after he moved to the United States that Christo’s work grew fully monumental. “He found his real scale when he came to America,” said Restany. “That sense of space and big dimension—it must be the same kind of feeling that the Europeans had when they first landed here in colonial times. It gave Christo a kind of hyper-dimension.” Even before he left Paris, he had begun to enlarge the size of the vitrines—the shrouded “showcases” he had been doing before he left Paris—into full-sized “storefronts.” He would continue to work on them, and on much larger proposals, in the United States, but it took him a while to get his bearings and learn how to work through the American system (which is more economically than politically oriented than in Europe, he seems to feel). To comprehend, for example, that the owners of two skyscrapers in Manhattan’s financial district weren’t going to let him wrap them up just like that, or the idea of an impenetrable barrier across a major east-west highway artery (the 1967 Closed Highway proposal) just wouldn’t wash here.
Unfortunately, those of us who value religious freedom have been disillusioned by multiple governments once too often. The current BJP-led government has no pretensions about its dislike for the secular idea. Even those governments that proudly flaunt the label of “secularism” have subjected us to their non-secular realpolitik. Take the politics of Rajiv Gandhi, for instance, often touted as a “secular” Prime Minister: his government not only overturned the Shah Bano judgment, but also banned Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses and had the locks of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya opened to Hindus. Every political party, including the Congress and the BJP, has played communal politics with everyone in India — Hindu, Muslim, minorities — in the search for pliable vote banks.
In the World War Two–era photograph introduced at the trial, Frank Walus was a thin Polish boy, blond and sparrow-faced. He looked like an adolescent, perhaps 13 or 14 years old, and showed no signs of being an eager murderer.
As long as it was allowed, instant triple talaq was essentially an easy way for a Muslim husband to throw his spouse out of the house and get on with his own life unencumbered. This was both cruel and unjust and Muslim women campaigned to get rid of this odious provision.
For flow cytometric analysis, patient blood was collected, as described above. Red blood cell (RBC) lysis was performed by a 1-min incubation in 0.2% NaCl, followed by addition of the equivalent volume of 1.6% NaCl. Cells were washed and resuspended in FACS buffer [phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), 1.0 mM EDTA, and 5% fetal bovine serum (FBS)]. Cells were incubated in PBS containing LIVE/DEAD Fixable Aqua (1:500; Invitrogen) with Fc Receptor Binding Inhibitor (1:200; eBioscience). Cells were then incubated in FACS buffer for 30 min with CD45-APC (1:25; Thermo Fisher Scientific), CD11c-APCeF780 (1:100; Thermo Fisher Scientific), CD14-BV785 (1:100; BioLegend), CD163-PECy7 (1:100; BioLegend), EPCAM-FITC (1:100; Abcam), or cytokeratin-PE (1:500; Abcam). A BD LSRFortessa cell analyzer was used for analyses. A gating scheme established with single-color controls is provided in fig. S10. Data reflect analyses from n = 3 patients with PDAC.
At his trial, Frank Walus, accused of more than a dozen brutal murders, always wore a tiny American-flag pin in his lapel. He is a very short man, he walked briskly into the courtroom, legs slightly bowed, almost like a tiny quarterback rushing confidently back to the huddle. In her book Eichmann in Jerusalem, Hannah Arendt first used the phrase “the banality of evil” to describe the functionaries of the Gestapo apparatus. This man in the courtroom with his American-flag pin and neat light-blue suit, his chain flexible-band wristwatch, always neatly dressed, polite, covering yawns with his hand — this surely was an ordinary man. His wife accompanied him each day in her cloth coat, her light-brown hair freshly done in ringlets. She had an open, guileless face. She would wave, a little flutter wave, to friends from the neighborhood as she and Walus came from the rear of the courtroom. Walus would hitch his trousers as he sat down. Occasionally he’d nod at friends.

The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are protected by Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back, but that doesn’t mean the glass won’t crack. We recommend nabbing a case to protect the back, and you may want to buy a screen protector to prevent a shattered screen or simple scratches. If you do apply a screen protector and are having trouble with the touchscreen, there’s a setting you can toggle on to help. Head to Settings > Advanced features > Touch sensitivity to toggle it on. It increases the touch sensitivity, making the screen more reactive even with a screen protector applied over the display.
