For acute poisoning patients, surviving the initial episode doesn’t mean the worst is over. Many patients begin to make a recovery, but between 2 and 40 days later, things change. The patients rapidly show signs of further brain damage. Balance, memory, and cognitive functions all affected. This phenomenon is called delayed neuropsychologic sequelae, and it was devastating for Molly Weber. The mechanism of neuropsychologic sequelae is still not completely understood. Research has shown that carbon monoxide damages Myelin Basic Protein (MBP), the material which surrounds nerve cells. The damaged MBP triggers the body’s immune system. White blood cells called leukocytes attack and remove the damaged MBP. The leukocytes don’t stop there though. They begin to attack healthy MBP, destroying healthy brain tissue. The result of this biological one-two punch leaves permanent brain injuries that can take years to recover – if recovery is possible at all.

These projects take not just time but a massive infusion of capital. This is where Jeanne-Claude comes in. Since 1970, the time of Valley Curtain, she has been president and treasurer of the CVJ Corporation, which has as its assets all the artist’s unsold works and receives all monies from their sale and is charged with all costs of a project. Once a Christo project has its requisite approvals and is on the brink of its most capital-intensive stage, Jeanne-Claude sends out about a hundred letters offering “purchasing subscribers” the chance to buy drawings at a discount in exchange for cash; in the case of Surrounded Islands, subscribers had to make an up-front payment of $50,000 or more, for which they later received drawings at a 30 percent discount. The full price of a Christo work ranges from $10,000 for a 22-by-28-inch collage of a work-in-progress to $36,000 for a drawing eight feet across; prices for studies of completed projects are higher (in the case of Surrounded Islands, $14,000 and $45,000), because Christo produces no more drawings of a work after it has reached the execution stage. Over the years, Christo has sold primarily to four or five private dealers, most of them European, and directly to museums and collectors. The system apparently works so smoothly that this time Christo was able to qualify for an impressive $700,000 worth of loans from Citibank—not bad for a still-controversial contemporary artist, particularly considering that $500,000 of the total represents a standing line of credit that can be reactivated annually. “One important thing,” says Christo, “is that we’re working very much in a very simple way like any capitalist enterprise—only the most crazy thing, which everybody cannot understand, is that we’re not making any profit” (because all money is plowed into future projects). “In a way there is this enormous eccentricity who is highly individualistic and almost irresponsible in a way, which is what makes the projects so attractive.”

In contrast, two allies, albeit smaller ones, Jitan Ram Manjhi and Upendra Kushwaha, have quit and crossed over to the Mahagathbandhan. Given the way the BJP leadership had accommodated the Lok Janshakti Party and a possible repeat appears on the cards vis-a-vis the Apna Dal in Uttar Pradesh, it is evident that the BJP is no longer the dominant force it was in 2014. Back in 2012, when the BJP had few allies and Narendra Modi was asked how he intended to overcome this deficiency in its arsenal, he ascribed the downturn to the party’s winnability declining. “Once we increase our strike rate, the allies will automatically come because of the benefits in being partners with us,” Mr Modi had then said. It is evident that the argument has now turned on its head.

Hospitals in various parts of the world use around half the recovered plasma for fractionation.

The option of a dissenting view in the final report is one that I have considered, and dismissed. The main reason being that I disagree with so much of the content, and writing a dissent would (in the main) be responding to the original report. That is more of an academic exercise, than one that is helpful. Another important reason is that this report reads like a judgement and makes findings which include exonerating individuals – despite us not hearing the victims (by their choice), not discussing fully the 19 statements received (which we agreed was not evidence – but which we cannot pretend does not include substance worthy of our attention), and also not having tested the authenticity of documents produced, especially by Isaacs and Achmat.

Not just because she was a woman, but also because she was on the enquiry and I think it raises such an important point which is that, you know, I was 23 and incredibly naïve and I had identified that there seemed to be this perpetrator, but the truth is that perpetrators don’t tend to be able to get away with repeatedly perpetrating without having enablers.

On 12th July 2018, Equal Education published a full notice on its website advising that the members of the Panel of Enquiry had been appointed, that attorneys CTH were assisting and complainants were encouraged to contact a named attorney and a candidate attorney at a special email address – equaleducation@cth.co.za - or at a telephone number.
