As always with a Christo project, there was also the official barrage of statistics—this time emanating on pink paper. Christo and Jeanne-Claude were hardly at a loss when it came to playing up the project for the minor engineering miracle that it was, with its vast amount of custom-fabricated and -sewn material (three times more than was used for Running Fence), its 610 specially designed, hydraulically positioned anchors, linked by radiating lines to the 12-inch-wide octagonal booms that defined the outer edges of the floating fabric. Because every element had to be manipulated from the water (from 32 boats, including the rubber rafts), Surrounded Islands was logistically one of the most complicated projects Christo has undertaken. Partly because of the fragility of the bay habitat, the project generated seven public hearings, ten permit applications, $400,000 worth of environmental tests and several court appearances by the Christo legal team during its 30 months of preparation. Once the project was realized, it cost $15,000 a day for maintenance, island monitoring and security. (Nobody had ever noticed before that the bay, with its swarms of speeding power boats, was ecologically fragile, nor the islands themselves—chunks of earth, now litter strewn, that had been dumped into the bay by the Army Corps of Engineers when it deepened the Intracoastal Waterway early in the century.)

For acute poisoning patients, surviving the initial episode doesn’t mean the worst is over. Many patients begin to make a recovery, but between 2 and 40 days later, things change. Research has shown that carbon monoxide damages Myelin Basic Protein (MBP), the material which surrounds nerve cells. The damaged MBP triggers the body’s immune system. White blood cells called leukocytes attack and remove the damaged MBP. The leukocytes don’t stop there though. They begin to attack healthy MBP, destroying healthy brain tissue. The result of this biological one-two punch leaves permanent brain injuries that can take years to recover – if recovery is possible at all.

Since no mention had been made at this time by ‘Jane’ to Achmat of any untoward or distressing incident with any person whatsoever, let alone Isaacs, it is difficult to see how any reading could be made that Achmat was telling ‘Jane’ that “she had brought the harassment on herself because she wore too much make-up”. ‘Jane’ had never mentioned in any Facebook message that there had been any form of sexual or other harassment or threat by Isaacs. Achmat’s use of this word “make-up” can only be in the context as found in his lengthy communication to her and his concerns set out therein because there had been no mention by ‘Jane’ to him of any event to which he could have intended or made the response as now alleged by her through the Mail & Guardian.
